Physical Activity¶
Regular active is essential for a healthy life.
A balance of flexibility, strength and movement activities form the foundation of a healthy mind and body, significantly reducing the risk of disease and injury.
Physical appearance is only a rough guide to a persons health.
A healthy diet supports activity
An unbalanced diet containing highly processed foods cannot compensated for through exercise.
Weight¶
Considering the whole weight of a body is a vague indication of health.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is also a rough indicator of health.
These measurements do not take into account the body frame or percentage of visceral fat, external fat and muscle mass.
Visceral fat accumulates around your organs and excess levels cause arteries to clog, insulin resistance, heart conditions and many other health problems.
External fat is a natural part of the bodies longer term energy store.

A person may look thin from the outside yet still have high levels of unhealthy visceral fat due to poor diet and lack of physical activity.
Flexibility¶
Yoga and Pilates increase the strength and flexibility of the body.
Breathing exercises typical in these activities also reduce stress and increase mental well-being.
Low Impact Activities¶
A low impact activity reduces the risk of injury and is typically easier option when starting to increase a persons health.
Walking, Swimming and Cycling are the lowest impact activities.
A brisk walking pace is at least 100 steps per minute, e.g. 5kmh / 3mph. A pace that allows a person to to talk but not struggle to sing.
A brisk walk after a meal
Prevent insulin spikes and troughs by taking a brisk walk after a meal for 45 minutes or more.
Jogging and Running¶
A fast way to build up aerobic endurance in a short amount of time.
Running is especially taxing on the body and regular efforts should build up
Resistance Training¶
Building muscle mass is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. As muscles consume energy when used, the more muscles a body has the more energy is consumed.
Primarily an anaerobic activity that repetitively exercises a muscle group.
- lifting weights
- bodyweight exercises: push-ups, pull-ups, squats
- isometrics: planks
- plyometrics explosive movements: jump squats, box jumps
